What does Aphtin contain and how does it work?

The product contains sodium tetraborate (borax). It is used as a weak antiseptic. Boric acid and its salts belong to cellular poisons. They have a dehydrating effect on cellular cytoplasm, which leads to disturbances of the electrolyte and acid-base balance.
Borax binds irreversibly to structural and functional proteins of bacterial or fungal cells, resulting in bacteriostatic and antifungal activity.
The topical preparation can be absorbed through the mucous membrane, but the glycerol contained in the preparation prevents this process. It provides only the local antiseptic effect of borax, protecting against systemic absorption.
