What is Altabactin (Baneocin)?

A combined preparation containing antibiotics (bacitracin, neomycin), topically applied to the skin to treat bacterial infections.

What does Altabactin (Baneocin) contain and how does it work?

It is a combined preparation containing 2 active substances: bacitracin and neomycin. Both active substances have antibacterial properties, but they exhibit different, complementary mechanisms of action. Bacitracin is a bactericidal antibiotic with antibacterial activity. It causes damage to the bacterial cell wall. Used only locally. Neomycin is an antibiotic from the aminoglycoside group. The mechanism of action of neomycin, common for the whole group of aminoglycosides, consists in inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial proteins. The combined effect of 2 antibiotics provides a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity of the preparation and reduces the risk of resistant strains. Neomycin applied topically to intact skin is practically not absorbed into the blood, however, in case of skin damage, long-term use or in a large area, it may show systemic effects. Bacitracin is not absorbed from the surface of the skin or mucous membranes.

When should I use Altabactin (Baneocin)?
