What is Ascofer?
Preparation containing iron in the form of gluconate.
What does Ascofer contain and how does it work?
The active substance of the preparation is iron sulphate. Iron is part of hemoglobin, myoglobin, enzymes associated with the respiratory chain. Part of the iron is directly used by cells of the erythroblastic system to produce hemoglobin, the remainder accumulates in the form of ferritin and hemosiderin in tissues, mainly in the liver and spleen. Preparations taken orally are absorbed mainly in the duodenum and upper part of the small intestine. Deficiency occurs in conditions of increased demand or in the case of chronic latent blood loss. The demand for this element is increased in women during pregnancy and puerperium, in breastfeeding mothers and in adolescents during their growth. The special construction of the tablet provides a slow release of iron ions from it, which prevents the occurrence of side effects.
When should you use Ascofer?
The preparation is indicated for use in the following cases:
- iron deficiency states associated with blood loss (after injuries, chronic bleeding, surgery, dialysis, in women with heavy menstrual bleeding)
- states of increased body demand for iron (in children during intensive growth, during pregnancy and breastfeeding)
- conditions associated with malabsorption (after stomach resection, malabsorption syndrome, persistent diarrhea) or with a diet containing too little iron.
When not to use this preparation?
Unfortunately, even if there are indications to use the preparation, it can not always be used. You can not use the preparation if you are allergic (you are hypersensitive) to any of the ingredients.
Contraindications to the use of the preparation are also: blood diseases (hemosiderosis, hemochromatosis - pigmented cirrhosis characterized by
absorption and excessive deposition of iron in internal organs in the form of hemosiderin, haemolytic and aplastic anemia), proliferative diseases, liver cirrhosis.
Take special care with Ascofer?
Certain diseases and other circumstances may constitute a contraindication to use or indication to change the dosage of the preparation. In some situations it may be necessary to carry out specific check-ups.
The use of the medicinal product may cause a black colouration of the stools due to the presence of unabsorbed iron. It does not affect the effectiveness of the product and does not threaten health.
Supplementing iron deficiency should always be combined with diagnostics of the reasons for this condition.
Information on additional components of the preparation:
The preparation contains azo dye: red Allura AC, lak; because of this, it can cause allergic reactions.

Can I use Ascofer during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
During pregnancy, do not use any medicine without consulting your doctor!
It is very important to consult a physician before taking any medicine during pregnancy (and also during breastfeeding) and to explain beyond any doubt the potential risks and benefits of using the medicine. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, please inform the doctor prescribing the prescription for this medicine.
During pregnancy and lactation, the preparation can be used with a prescription.
Can I use other preparations in parallel?
Tell your doctor about all medicines you have recently taken, including those that are over the counter.
It is not recommended to use the product in parallel with medicines that reduce its absorption: antacids, antibiotics from the tetracycline group,
neomycin, chloramphenicol, fluoroquinolone derivatives (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin), cholestyramine, calcium and bismuth salts, pancreatic extracts.
The absorption of iron is increased in the presence of ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
Iron compounds administered orally reduce the effect of methyldopa, levodopa, penicillamine and thyroxine (exacerbate the symptoms of hypothyroidism); their parallel use is not recommended.
Simultaneous consumption of tea, coffee, eggs, food or medicines containing bicarbonates, carbonates, oxalates or phosphates, milk or milk products, wholemeal bread or cereal flakes and other products containing fiber may reduce the absorption of iron.
Do not use the preparation within one hour before or two hours after the mentioned medicines and food.
What side effects can occur?

The following may occur: diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, epigastric pain. In such cases, a dose reduction is indicated. The use of the drug may cause black stools coloration, which does not threaten health.
