What is Artelac?

The product is applied locally to the eye (into the conjunctival sac) ensuring proper hydration of the Corn ea and conjunctiva.

What does Artelac contain and how does it work?

The product contains hypromellose, a water-soluble cellulose derivative. Hypromellose is a viscoelastic substance, its aqueous solution has physicochemical properties that allow its use in so-called "Artificial tears". The solution adheres well to the surface of the cornea and conjunctiva, is characterized by adequate viscosity, elasticity and adhesion which ensures long-lasting hydration. Under physiological conditions, adequate moisture of the corneal surface is provided by a thin layer of tear fluid adhering to the surface of the eye. If the amount or composition of tear fluid is impaired, the cornea and conjunctiva dry out, leading to a dry eye syndrome and symptoms such as irritation, burning, dryness, feeling of sand in the eye, pain and sensitivity to light. The causes of dry eye syndrome may include a reduction in tear production in the elderly, work in an air-conditioned room or at the computer, hormonal changes during menopause, environmental pollution and others. Hypromellose in the form of eye drops reduces the symptoms of irritation and pain caused by drying of the epithelium. After topical application to the conjunctival sac, hypromellosis does not penetrate the inside of the eyeball and is not absorbed into the systemic circulation.

When to use Artelac?

The preparation is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of dry eye syndrome caused by impaired tear secretion or functional disorders in the course of diseases leading to eyelid blepharoplasty.
The formulation can also be used for wetting hard contact lenses.
